At least 21 people have been killed in a traffic jam caused by heavy snowfall in Pakistan. Thousands of tourists were on their way to see the snowfall when the accident happened. The accident took place on Saturday in the hilly tourist area of Mari, Punjab province, the country’s authorities said. News AFP.
At least six tourists were killed when their vehicle overturned in extreme cold, police said. However, they could not confirm whether the others died of severe respiratory problems due to freezing of the vehicle.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid has said that members of the armed forces have been deployed to the area for rescue operations on the snow-covered road.
Many such videos have spread on social media. As seen in the video, another car is stuck with the bumper of one car. Snow piles of at least one meter (three feet) high have accumulated on the roofs of the vehicles.
Numerous tourists are stuck on the road due to snowfall. One of them, Usman Abbasi, said people were facing dire situations.

Due to the healthy environment, various scenic installations and resorts were built in Muri for the troops during the British colonial era. Mari is located about 60 km northeast of Islamabad.
The Punjab chief minister’s office said Mari had already been declared a “disaster prone area”. Besides, everyone has been requested not to go there.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has expressed deep grief over the loss of life. In a tweet, he said the local administration was struggling to cope with the situation as tourists flocked there without checking the unpredictable snowfall and weather forecast. He further said that an inquiry committee has been directed into the incident. Strict laws will be enacted to prevent such tragedies.
