Record number of journalists imprisoned worldwide in 2021

The record for the imprisonment of journalists around the world has been set in 2021. This information has come up in the new report of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). The report was released on CPJ’s website on Thursday.

As of December 1 this year, 293 journalists have been imprisoned worldwide, according to the CPJ’s annual report on attacks on media freedom and the media. At least 24 journalists have been killed this year due to journalism.

According to the CPJ report, 18 more journalists have died this year in situations where it is difficult to confirm whether they have been targeted for their work.

The U.S.-based nonprofit, which works with journalists, says journalists are being held in different countries for one reason or another. However, the arrest and imprisonment of a record number of journalists is a reflection of political instability around the world and growing intolerance towards independent journalism.

CPJ executive director Joel Simon said in a statement that the CPJ had recorded a record number of journalists being imprisoned for the sixth time around the world.

Joel Simon said the numbers present two inseparable challenges: the government is determined to control information and is becoming increasingly rigid in doing so.

One of the journalists who lost his life this year was Danish Siddiqui. He was a photojournalist for the news agency Reuters. He was killed in a Taliban attack in Afghanistan last July. Gustavo Sanchez Cabrera was also shot dead in Mexico last June.

According to CPJ, China has the highest number of 50 journalists deported this year. Then there is Myanmar. The military junta has arrested 26 journalists in the country since the February coup. This year, 25 journalists have been detained in Egypt, 23 in Vietnam and 19 in Belarus.

For the first time this year, the CPJ has listed journalists imprisoned in Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous region of China.
