Following the decision of the Washington City Council, the road in front of the Saudi Embassy in the United States will be named ‘Jamal Khashoggi Way’.
Khashoggi was brutally murdered in October 2016 at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Khashoggi was vocal in his criticism of the current Saudi ruler. While living in the United States, Khashoggi went to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in need of documents to marry his Turkish fianc. His body was not found.
The New Hampshire Avenue road in front of the Saudi Embassy in the United States is being renamed in honor of Khashoggi.
The New Hampshire Avenue road runs between the Saudi Embassy and the Watergate Complex in the United States. It was recently proposed to rename the road ‘Jamal Khashoggi Way’. The bill was unanimously approved by the Washington City Council on Tuesday. Washington Mayor Muriel Bouzer is expected to sign the bill.
Congress reviews all local government laws in the U.S. capital. It is believed that the Congress will not object to the naming of the road after Khashoggi.
According to a report by the Washington City Council on the Jamal Khashoggi Way Bill, Jamal Khasogi has worked for democracy, human rights and the rule of law through journalism. By naming the road in front of the Saudi embassy after Jamal Khashoggi, a monument was erected in his honor which cannot be removed.
According to AFP, the Saudi embassy did not respond to a request for comment on the naming of the road after Khashoggi.
It is alleged that Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia authorized the killing of Khashoggi. Such information has come up in the reviews of Western intelligence. However, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia has denied the allegations.
