UN chief calls on US to lift sanctions on Iran
The United Nations has called on Washington to lift sanctions on Iran in line with the nuclear deal. It also called on Iran to return to its nuclear program.
UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Rosemary DiCarlo made the call on Tuesday.
“I urge the United States to lift its sanctions on Iran and to extend its sanctions on Iran,” Rosemary said.
Rosemary told the UN Security Council that the lifting of US sanctions on Iran over some of its key civilian nuclear-related activities was important.
The world powers are holding talks in Vienna, the capital of Austria, with the aim of reviving the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. However, differences between Iran and the West continue to grow in the talks. The official name of the nuclear deal with Iran is the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Under the agreement, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program. Instead of complying with the conditions, various sanctions imposed on Iran were lifted.
However, in 2016, the then US President Donald Trump announced his withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran. Iran has since been accused of enriching uranium.
Rosemary DiCarlo has called on Iran to refrain from taking steps that are inconsistent with its nuclear-related commitments under the plan.
In a joint statement, the signatories, Germany, the United Kingdom and France, as well as Russia and China, said the diplomatic door was now open for Iran to reach an agreement. In the interest of the people and the nation, Iran must choose between canceling the treaty or a fair one.
Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Majid Takht-e Ravanchi, has said his country is not imposing any preconditions or new conditions on a return to the nuclear deal. They are ready to change the steps that have been taken since the withdrawal from the Washington Agreement.
Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the United Nations, said that if Iran agreed to return to its previous condition, the United States was ready to return to its condition.
