The United States has won an appeal against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The UK High Court on Friday ruled against Assange. This raises the possibility of his extradition to the US authorities.
Assange will soon have to face the US judiciary if the court ruling is effective. However, Assange will be able to go to the Supreme Court with this verdict. Assange’s fianc স্টe Stella Morris has already said she will appeal the ruling.
Julian Assange, the founder of the website WikiLeaks, which leaked millions of classified US documents, is accused in a lawsuit filed under the country’s customary espionage law.
Last January, a lower court in the United Kingdom rejected a request from the United States to extradite Assange for disclosing secret US military documents a decade ago. The court ruled that Assange could not be extradited to the United States. His mental health condition may have led him to commit suicide.
The United States has said in a statement that if the United States agrees to extradite Assange, the WikiLeaks founder could face imprisonment in any US prison in his native Australia. He will also not be held in the high-security ADX prison in Colorado. Assange’s lawyers rejected the offer.
The United States later appealed the decision to a lower court. High Court Judge Timothy Hallroy then said the court was approving the appeal. He further added that he was satisfied with the conditions and package guaranteed by the United States for Assange’s return.
However, despite the High Court ruling, Assange is not being extradited to the United States. This legal battle could go as far as the Supreme Court. Assange’s fiance Stella Morris said they were going to appeal the ruling. “How logical is it to want to extradite Assange to the country that wanted to assassinate him?”
Assange’s lawyer Mark Summers said earlier that there were questions about the credibility of the US commitment. US intelligence agencies are interested in Assange. According to a recent report, the CIA had planned to abduct and poison Assange from the Ecuadorian embassy in London.
Assange was not present in court at the time of the High Court verdict. He has been in the Belmars prison in London for two and a half years.
