A policeman has been shot dead by the Taliban in Pakistan. The incident took place in Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday. The police officer was in charge of the safety of the polio vaccinators.
Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attack. One month ago, the TTP signed a ceasefire agreement with the Pakistani government, mediated by the Taliban government in Afghanistan. Then last Friday they announced the breaking of the ceasefire. On that day, the Taliban announced that the Pakistani government was not abiding by the ceasefire. Then such an incident happened.
Qatar-based media outlet Al-Jazeera quoted Aimal Khan, a spokesman for the vaccination program, as saying that the polio vaccination program had been underway there for five days. This program has been started to vaccinate 75 lakh children. The police officer was killed on the second day of the program.
Police officer Sajjad Ahmed said police were taking polio vaccinators to the hills in the Chaddarah area of Tank district. At that time, shots were fired at them from the motorcycle. There were two riders on the motorcycle. A policeman was killed on the spot. Another was seriously injured. However, none of the vaccination workers were injured.
Meanwhile, CNN reported that the TTP signed a ceasefire agreement with the Pakistani government a month ago. The two sides sat down for talks soon after the agreement was reached. The contract was valid until last Thursday. The idea was to extend the contract. But the Taliban announced on Saturday that the agreement was not being extended. The reason given was that the Pakistani government had not released more than 100 prisoners as promised. Apart from this, a mediator was to be appointed to take forward the talks between the two parties. That step was not taken.
